The last time Governor Jane Swift visited Brigham and Women’s Hospital she made history. In May 2001 Swift became the first woman in the nation to give birth while serving as governor when she delivered twins, Lauren and Sarah, at BWH. Her arrival at the hospital last weekend was less historic, but her treatment for viral meningitis still caught the attention of the media.
“I’m very grateful for this extraordinary care that picked up on what is a pretty significant illness,” said Swift, praising the care she received at BWH.
BWH again served as a backdrop for attention surrounding the Governor’s hospitalization. At a Saturday afternoon press conference, Brigham and Women’s Physician Organization President Troy Brennan, MD, indicated that viral meningitis is “very common in young and very active people.”
Swift’s admission was triggered by severe headaches and nausea. During her stay at BWH, Swift governed from her hospital bed. Emerging to greet the media gathered at 15 Francis Street on Monday, Swift “promised to listen to my doctors.”
